The 'Bonneville', Triumph's iconic sports twin, remained an industry standard into the eighties. Even today, an owner never has to say 'Triumph' – just 'Bonnie' will do. Nevertheless, owners of the more highly tuned Meriden models always suffered from the powerful twin's vibration, and the increased rider comfort of other makes meant that they supplanted Triumphs for big establishment contracts such as for police use. A known problem, the issue of rider comfort was addressed by Triumph in the eighties with a radical redesign, which proved quite costly. One avenue taken was the construction of pre-production 'Anti-Vibration' (AV) models in the hope of a realistic solution and a re-capture of the market. As carefully documented in 'Classic Bike Guide' for January 2008, fewer than fifty were manufactured and they were mostly T140 electric-start machines fitted with a rubber mounting system between engine unit and frame
